# Copper peptides beneath the surface

> GHK and copper | Belle Telehealth — Belle Telehealth follows GHK-Cu through collagen-making cell cultures, tissue-remodeling research and the scope of gene-expression findings.

Collagen-making cells, tissue remodeling and a large gene-expression claim make for a busy close-up.

## Collagen in human cell cultures

The [collagen-synthesis experiment in human fibroblast cultures](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3169264/) is an appealing place to start with GHK-Cu. Collagen synthesis increased, and cell number stayed unchanged. Those paired observations narrow the explanation: the culture’s output changed without an increase in the number of cells.

I relish that little act of narrowing. It gives the collagen result a more precise shape than the idea of making skin younger. The setting remains a dish of cells; questions about visible changes lead to the [human skin research](/wrinkles).

The concentration-dependent response is also interesting as cell biology. It gives the experiment a particular relationship between exposure and activity, rather than an all-purpose claim that more peptide must produce more of everything. That relationship could happily occupy me for a while before any cosmetic conclusion.

## Production and remodeling

The [review of GHK and tissue remodeling describes changes in collagen and elastin synthesis, matrix-remodeling enzymes and their inhibitors, and recruitment of repair cells](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18644225/). It brings together human and animal studies using different experimental settings. Its breadth is useful for thinking about tissue activity, with those differences still attached.

I had pictured collagen as the whole subject. This review gives the surrounding tissue considerably more to do. Production, enzyme activity and cell recruitment make a crowded scene; I prefer this crowded picture to the suggestion that a lone ingredient simply adds a fresh layer of collagen.

The broad account also invites separate experiments for its separate activities. I’d give a specific measured response more weight than the impressive length of the list.

## Gene activity

The [gene-data review reports that GHK modulated approximately 31.2% of human genes at a change threshold of 50% or greater](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6073405/). The genome-wide signature came from database analysis, with related cell-culture work. Gene expression concerns the activity of genes. This was molecular and computational evidence, rather than a measurement of people becoming younger.

The scale of that claim initially sounds spectacular to me. Then the threshold and the setting give it a more workable shape: many gene-expression signals crossed a stated cutoff. The pattern appeals to my curiosity; a visible improvement in a face remains a separate question.

My enthusiasm rises with a well-defined cell result and becomes more tentative as the explanation grows wider. That is where this close-up currently leaves me: interested in the biology, still waiting for the visible outcome to earn the same breadth.
